- Skills learned and used: Paths Tool, Alternative Cropping (Paths Tool. Drawing paths around the object/image. Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel. Toolbox>Selection From Path. Select>Invert. Edit>Cut. Done!) I found most of the images on Google, except one is a photo of my very own companion pigeon, Boyd.
- Skills learned and used: Paths Tool, Alternative Cropping (Paths Tool. Drawing paths around the object/image. Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel. Toolbox>Selection From Path. Select>Invert. Edit>Cut.), Blur Tool (Filters>Blur>Motion Blur) to give off the effect that the person is being risen somewhat quickly -plus it looks kind of mystical in my opinion- I also messed around a bit with Lighting Effects in Filters and applied them to create a beam of light- so to speak. Thank you very much! I’m really enjoying learning about different effects and features. All of the photos used in this work were found on Google.
- For this work I saved 2 images (Black & White forest image, and a bear image) from Google and opened them as layers on GIMP. Then I selected the chosen top layer (Bear) and blended it with the bottom layer (forest image) Layer>Mode>Lighten Only. Done!
- Double Exposure: For this work I saved 2 images (Girl & Cityscape) from Google and opened them as layers on GIMP. Then I selected the top layer (Girl) and blended it with the bottom layer (Cityscape) Layer>Mode>Lighten Only. I also turned the original photo of the Cityscape 90° so it could -sort of- act as her hair. Image>Transform>Rotate 90° Clockwise.
Mackenzie – Student National Fellow – Drexel University
Mackenzie is one of our Student National Fellows who is currently enrolled at Drexel University studying animation and visual effects. She is great about sharing insights she is learning along the way such as getting into the habit of drawing everyday to encourage your creativity.
“One of my assignments for a class is to draw 7 different objects for 7 days. Last week we had to draw 7 cats and this week was 7 trees. The drawings should take no longer than 10 minutes and are just simple pieces, the goal is simply to get you into the habit of drawing everyday. I recommend this to everyone as it helps encourage your imagination and gets you into a creative mood.”
Judah – DDP101 student – 11th grade – California
Judah just completed DDP101 and posted some outstanding comments and works:
“I’ve finished DDP101. I enjoyed this course very much. I especially enjoyed seeing how each artist had their own unique style and different methods for creating their artwork. It was extremely educational for me as an artist to learn from other artists and try different techniques. Overall, I was very pleased with this course and I feel that it has helped me further establish my own style. Thank you YDACS!“
- I created this digital painting by implementing the techniques I learned while I watched”Chapter 1.4 – Brent’s vector coloring techniques.” Some of the skills I used to paint this character include, the Pencil Tool, the Bucket Tool, the Ellipse Tool, blurring after effects, duplicating objects, as well as various color editing effects.
- I added a background to for my character as taught in “Chapter 2.1 – Luke’s background and artwork.”
- For this edit I imported a sketch I had just finished of my friend into GIMP. I then enhanced my sketch using the Blurring Tool and Dodge/Burn Tool (as taught in chapter 3) to reduce the roughness of the pencil lines and give my art a more organic feel. I tried not to go over board with the editing so as not to lose too much of my detailing. I then used the Paths Tool which I learned about in this course to create my signature.
- Following the examples from “Chapter 3.4 – Mary’s coloring techniques” I decided to add a layer of color in my sketch. I’m pleased with the effect I was able to achieve thanks to GIMP’s flawless interface.
- To create this image I used techniques from though out the course. Using both Inkscape and GIMP. I drew the outline of my character and background in Inkscape. I then exported it as a PNG file and Imported it into GIMP where I colored it in.

Paige – DPP101 – 10th grade – California
Paige just completed DPP101 and her comments and excellent works are below:
“It was an interesting class, because though I had experienced gimp in the past, I didn’t know the complexity it could achieve, nor the selection of filters ect to choose from. I’m sure that I will use this program more in the future.”
- I used the magic wand tool to try to change the color of the foliage. Used cut/lasso, paste, transform to add subjects to the scene. Used the perspective filter to add shadows to the subjects.
- I used photo filters and pasted and manipulated the bird into there.
- I used distort and cubism to change the background and pasted the focal piece of the scene in a new layer to direct the attention to it.
- Used color controls to make everything blue then the mosaic filter to make a mosaic out of it.
Judah – DPP101 – 10th grade – California
Judah just completed DPP101, his works and comments are below:
“I’ve Finished DPP101. I really liked everything that I learned about GIMP’s interface throughout the course.”
- I created this piece using the paintbrush tool and the smudging tool.
- I used the paintbrush tool to add the sun rays and the coloring to the sky and mountains then I used the perspective tool to distort my dragon to give off the illusion it was real.
- I made this using a magnifying-glass that I drew in Inkscape, the B&W layer mask technique as taught in Chapter 4.5 and the apply lens filter. I also made the water appear to be a more vibrant blue hue using the paint brush tool on the mode “color”.
Nickolas – DM101 – 9th grade – California
Nickolas just completed DM101. His excellent comments and works are below:
“I’ve Finished DM101. It was a great learning experience. “
- First creation. Three dancing babies. To draw them I used a variety of circles stretched, blurred, colored, and layered to provide depth.
- Second creation. An alien. To draw it I used a variety of ovals with varying levels of opacity, methods of filling, and layering.
- Third creation. A Singing Girl. To draw her I used a few methods of drawing, such as using layering circles to create her hat and flower as well as a custom color to add realness.
- Final creation. A French Man. To draw him I used several methods of drawing, mostly using circles and ovals turned to an angle and layered to illustrate him holding a bottle.
Paige – DM101 – 10th grade – California
Paige is one of our new DM101 students who posted excellent original works and comments.
- Used duplicate and manipulation of the wings, linear fade and multiple duplication layers to add depth, and used the calligraphy tool to free-hand the body and plant.
- Used object manipulation and calligraphy tool to age taro up a few decades.
- Used a lot of grouping/ungrouping for this one; also scaling ect.
- Used pen tool and layers to trace a duck, then messed around with fill to get…that.
Evelyn – 3DDRW101 – 8th grade – Michigan
Evelyn one of our 3DDRW101 students rocked the course getting 100% on all of her quizzes but 1, posting 4 excellent original works, and leaving great comments.
“I’ve finished 3DDRW101! This was a challenging course, but ultimately I feel like I learned so many new techniques. 3D in general is an exciting topic, and it was very fun to develop the basic skills (which I will expand upon more and more as I go).
The greatest part about this experience was the support. I was having many difficulties at the beginning of the course, but the instructors were always willing to spend a lot of time and effort to help fix the problem both for me and the other students. Thank you so much! I will continue to make creative artwork with the help of these new skills.
-Evelyn”
- Here are my extruded YDACS letters!
- I opened my 3D letters in Gimp, and then used various tools and filters (specifically the paintbrush and supernova) to create this interesting lake scene.
- My next piece of work is my logo signature. Back in fourth or fifth grade, I invented this symbol to represent my initials (EEF). Now that it is extruded, lit, and rendered, the symbol has truly evolved!
- Like the YDACS letters, I also opened my logo in Gimp and created a (very green!) image. I decided to make trees because I love nature and I felt my logo would pair well with plantlife.
Anne – DDP101 student – 8th grade – California
Anne just completed DDP101 and posted 4 excellent works and her thoughts about the course.
“I loved this course! I found it extremely exciting to be able to bring some of my notebook drawings to life!”
- This is my version of B.O.T. who is modeled after Brent’s B.O.T in chapter 1. What I did was change the colors to make it my own
- I drew this after learning Luke’s techniques in lesson 2. I used a anime print out for tracing the body. I drew the hair and eyes myself and experimented with other tools
- Like B.O.T. I changed the normal colors used for Digi and gave it a personal touch. I used Mary’s sun technique to help me figure out shading and lighting
- For my final artwork, I found a drawing that I made last year named Pegasaur in my old notebook. I used Luke’s technique for Pegasaur and the dodge/burn tool for all the shading and lighting.
Alyssa – DPP101 student – 8th grade – Michigan
Alyssa is one of our 8th grade DPP101 students. She posted works that combined her drawing skills and the digital painting skills she learned in DPP101.
“I’ve finished DPP101 and posted 4 works! I learned how to put your drawing onto a photo, and use the fun filters in GIMP. This course has helped me to get to know how to use the program better, and make better artwork with it”
- This is a drawing I did of Garnet from Steven Universe. The tools I used were the Pencil tool, the Eraser tool, and the Eyedropper tool. The filter I used was the Lens Flare filter, set on Default.
- This is a drawing of a irritated cat I did. The tools I used were the Pencil tool, the Eraser tool, and the Eyedropper tool. The Filters I used are the Wind filter, and the Lens Flare filter, set to Supernova.
- This is a drawing I did of Dipper Pines from Steven Universe. The toos I used were the Pencil tool, the Eraser tool, and the Eyedropper tool. The filter I used was the Pizelation filter.
- This is my final piece. This is a drawing of a cat in a box that I did. I used the Pencil tool, the Eraser tool, and the Eyedropper tool. I imported this drawing into the cardboard box, which is not my creation.
